Horace Mann’s messianic view of government education

American educator Horace Mann most definitively had a messianic view of government education, where education replaces the work of the cross and the State is father of all children.

Read how religious his language is:

“Such, then, . . . is the Massachusetts system of common schools. Reverently it recognizes and affirms the sovereign rights of the Creator, sedulously and sacredly it guards the religious rights of the creature. . . . In a social and political sense, it is a free school system. It knows no distinction of rich and poor, of bond and free, or between those, who, in the imperfect light of this world, are seeking, through different avenues, to reach the gate of heaven. Without money and without price, it throws open its doors, and spreads the table of its bounty, for all the children of the State. Like the sun, it shines not only upon the good, but upon the evil, that they may become good; and, like the rain, its blessings descend not only upon the just, but upon the unjust, that their injustice may depart from them, and be know no more.” — Horace Mann, from a Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education (1848)

The film is coming together nicely, but it needs to be polished to ensure the audience is engaged and the message is communicated clearly.  At this point, it looks like the movie won’t be released officially until August.

There is some really good news – if you’re a Backstage Pass member – you’ll soon be able to log in and watch a rough cut version of the whole movie online! Introducing the ‘IndoctriNation’ School Bus Stress Toy!

The yellow school bus is a striking, unmistakable symbol of the American public school system. Now you can vent your public school frustrations with the all-new IndoctriNation School Bus Stress Toy! A visible reminder that you don’t need to “wait for Superman” to save your child’s education. This unique limited-edition school bus toy includes the IndoctriNation logo.  Your purchase will support the IndoctriNation project.

The success of the IndoctriNation film project will largely depend on your help in spreading the word. This is a great tool to get the conversation started!

Not edible.

The Indoctrination School Bus Toy
Why you might need an IndoctriNation Stress Toy!

- Public Education costs the American taxpayer over $600 Billion a year! 1

- Over 55% of children in public schools use school buses. Transporting children to their indoctrination centers costs you, the taxpayer, nearly $20 billion dollars a year! 2

- The NEA teachers union, largely funded by compulsory dues, actively promotes the Communist agitator Saul Alinsky on it’s own website! 3

- There’s no such thing as a Free Lunch! Except of course in the Socialist utopia called public schools. In it’s first year (1947) the National School Lunch Program cost $70 million – now 31 million kids receive a subsidized or free lunch costing the taxpayer $9.8 Billion a year! 4

- Your School district’s published cost per pupil is almost certainly lower than the real cost. Most estimates leave out capital expenditure – building cost, pension obligations etc. For example Houston ISD’s stated cost per pupil is $8,418, the true cost is $12,534. that’s 50% more than the district publicly states! 5

- If a family with 3 children sends their kids to the D.C. Unified School District for 12 years ($28,170 a year per child), after all the education is complete, that ONE family will have received a total of $ 1,014,120 dollars of educational welfare! 6

- The cost of one pupil for one year in the D.C. Unified School District, ($28,170) could pay for a home schooler ($350 as a moderate annual estimate) for 80 years! 7

- Since the year 2000, there have been over 400 violent deaths in American Public Schools! 8

- According to a 2004 report by Hofstra University professor Charol Shakeshaft, as many as one out of every 10 children will suffer school employee sexual misconduct at some point between kindergarten and 12th grade! 9

Keep up with us on Facebook, YouTube and Backstage

We are making excellent progress on the post-production of the film and we’re very excited about what the Lord will do through the work He has given us. Please pray that He will give us wisdom as we decide what to include in the film.

We have been posting videos and other items of interest on our Facebook page (it is so much more convenient and faster than updating this blog) and we encourage you to join it by clicking “Like” on our page. And if you are able, please share our Facebook page with your friends. (Our IndoctriNation interns will be updating this blog more regularly starting next week.)

Another great way to stay in touch is by visiting our YouTube page. We regularly post new videos and clips from the film there, which we also post on Facebook.

Also, we have been uploading additional interviews to our Backstage section, which can be accessed by purchasing a Backstage Pass. If you have a Pass and haven’t logged in for a while, check out the new uncut interviews we’ve posted recently, including Ken Ham at the Creation Museum, Samuel Blumenfeld in Boston, an interview with a teacher in Nebraska who was fired for speaking God’s truth to his students, and a very touching conversation Emily Gunn had with a graduate from the public school system who shares her testimony about what happens in the “best” schools in America.

Thank you for your prayers and for being cheerful supporters to this timely and important project. May the Lord multiply your blessings back to you abundantly.

Ken Ham interview

We strongly encourage you to watch this video clip of our interview with Ken Ham at the Creation Museum in Cincinnati. We were extremely privileged to be able to meet with him on the IndoctriNation tour and as expected he delivered a superb interview dealing primarily with the consequences of teaching evolution in our public schools.

Ken Ham had a considerable influence upon the Gunn Brothers as young men. His influential tours to Scotland and England encouraged both of us to consider the long term impact of evolutionary thinking and the unparalleled harm it has caused. A big part of our motivation to make IndoctriNation is to draw attention to this deep legacy of evolutionary philosophy within the public school system.

If you have already bought a backstage pass, please log in and enjoy the complete interview. If not, please consider going here to purchase one. The Backstage Pass is a great way to support the IndoctriNation project. It will get you a first run DVD of the movie IndoctriNation along with access to an abundance of great interviews and extra footage, most of which will not make it onto the DVD due to time constraints.

One other way to help the IndoctriNation project, if you haven’t already, is to join our Facebook page and invite your friends to also join. This will be a great way for us to spread the word about the IndoctriNation project.

We want to thank everyone for the all the generous support that has been given to this project. Please pray for us as we continue through the arduous and extremely time consuming process of post production.

The Best $50 you’ll spend this month.

This month we will be uploading tons of great behind-the-scenes material that we shot during our big yellow school bus tour. If you haven’t already, please consider buying a $50 Backstage Pass that will give you access to exclusive interview footage, most of which will never make it into the released film. Your purchase enables us to keep submerged in the post-production of the film without having to come up for air to our day jobs, at least until the end of the year.

In addition to hours of interview footage, your $50 purchase will also get you: 1) A hot-off-the-press first edition of the IndoctriNation DVD, mailed to you before the film release; 2) Full-length online versions of two previous Gunn productions, the award-winning films “The Monstrous Regiment of Women” and “Shaky Town” to watch as many times as you want; and 3) Access to our exclusive Online VIP Premiere of the film, to be shared with friends and family, prior to the nationwide release of “IndoctriNation.”

Also, please visit our Facebook page and click on “Like” to keep up with our progress as we edit this important film. And continue to pray for wisdom and provision, both of which we are trusting the Lord will give abundantly.

Bracing myself

For some time now, and particularly during the last week of the IndoctriNation School Bus Tour, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of this little documentary film we’re making here. I have been blessed to witness our loving Father providentially put many things together, and keep numerous others from taking place, all resulting in the capturing of some truly amazing interviews and probably more than enough footage to edit a few films.

Looking at my viewfinder and listening on headphones most of the time gave me a unique opportunity to listen closely to what Colin and our interviewees discussed and I’ve had a growing sense of really how devastating this film can be against those who will make the case for Christians remaining in and trying to reform America’s public schools. In addition to about 20 interviews we already had before we hit the road, Colin sat down in front of my camera with the likes of Ken Ham, Howard Phillips, John Taylor Gatto, Sam Blumenfeld, Neal McCluskey, Scott Brown, and others, and with three insiders to the public school system: a former principal, a former student, and a current grade school teacher, all of whom gave us phenomenal testimonies and tremendous insights that are sure to impact many who see the finished film. (All of these interviews will be posted online for our Backstage Pass holders to review.)

Only the Holy Spirit can bring conviction to a man and move him to reform his ways, and the Word of God is the sword He uses to pierce the hearts of His people. Having said that, I think the Lord may very well use the humble efforts of a seemingly feeble band of filmmakers to help challenge the thoughts and arguments that have polluted the minds of God’s children for too long.

Please pray for us. We need much wisdom and discernment as we attempt to edit all of this footage down to about 5% of the original content. And we still need to raise the rest of the post-production budget to edit it all into an effective narrative. Our goal is not to entertain but we do desire to engage our audience with a compelling story and to convey our message as clearly as possible.

Almost done with production. Next: Post-production!

Well, the IndoctriNation School Bus Tour is now over, except for Colin Gunn and his family who, together with Matthew Jackson, are on their way back to Texas this week. Just a few interviews still remain to be captured, including one with Dr. Voddie Baucham, and one with the father of a Columbine High School victim. Thank you to all of our interviewees, to those who provided hospitality to the cast and crew during the tour, and to all of you who supported us in prayer and with your donations and Backstage Pass purchases to make it all possible.

We have over 20 hours of incredible interview and bus tour footage to cut down to approximately 90 minutes. Music needs to be selected as well as written and produced. Animations and motion graphics need to be created. A narration must be written and recorded. Archival footage must be compiled and acquired. And possibly some more b-roll needs to be shot to add cohesion to the final cut of the film. All of this will take hours, days, weeks, and months of work. We would like to release the film in January, 2011.

But all that will have to wait. This week and next, the Fernandez family is in Greenville, SC, for the surgical correction of daughter Francesca’s scoliosis, scheduled for Wednesday at 8:00 AM. Please keep us in your prayers.
